Medicare Funding for Psychology

28 August, 2025

I feel like I’m running on empty. No matter how much I rest, I wake up exhausted, like I’ve been carrying the weight of the world in my sleep.

My patience is paper-thin — the smallest things make me snap, and then I feel guilty for overreacting.

My chest feels tight, my mind never switches off, and it’s like I’m constantly on edge, waiting for something else to go wrong.

I’ve tried telling myself to just ‘get on with it,’ but it’s harder and harder to keep pretending I’m okay.

Some days I wonder if I’m burnt out, depressed, or just not strong enough to cope anymore.

I just want to feel like myself again.

When you are thinking like that, you are in the right place! Finding a psychologist that's caring, compassionate and experienced to guide you to better wellbeing. You know that you need the assistance but then there's the juggle of navigating the Medicare system.

We have broken down the key Medicare funding options for psychology to help you on your way to getting the help you deserve.

How does Medicare fund Psychology?

You can get Medicare funding to see a psychologist as part of:

Mental Health Care Plan for Psychology

Each calendar year you may be eligible for up to 10 sessions with your psychologist. Once the new calendar year starts, this resets the count for another 10 sessions.

I've used all 10 sessions from my Mental Health Care Plan, what now?

Once you've completed your 10 sessions from your Mental Health Care Plan, you may either:

  • Get a new plan if it's the new calendar year for a further 10 sessions,

  • Get a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, OR

  • Use private health insurance extras

GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP)

If you suffer an ongoing issue such as anxiety, depression or chronic ill-health, your GP might write you a GPCCMP. This will entitle you up to 5 sessions per calendar year. These sessions are shared amongst all allied health so that you might use all 5 sessions for psychology or some for other services (eg: chiropractic or dietetics).

Note that these are a renamed version of Chronic Disease Management (CDM) or Enhanced Primary Care (EPC). This came into effect 1st July 2025 but old plans written prior to that are still acceptable until they expire.
